The Fund for the North State was established by the Community Foundation of the North State to support the changing needs of our communities with flexible, responsive grantmaking. This permanent, foundation-directed fund is invested to grow and grant to a wide variety of causes in Shasta, Siskiyou and Tehama Counties. Since its inception, more than $350,000 has been granted.

All Trade Services, Inc. is a family-owned company based out of Mount Shasta, CA that specializes in the HVAC, Electrical, and Plumbing trades. The goal of this scholarship is to provide funding for a career path in the trades (HVAC, Electrical, or Plumbing) to one Siskiyou County graduating senior each year.

Long-time residents of the North State, Dennis, Kathy and family, feel passionately about family and community. They established this fund to target pressing needs and promote opportunities in Shasta and Siskiyou counties.

This fund was established by the Red Bluff Bull and Gelding Sale in honor and memory of Andy Peek. Andy Peek was president of Western Video Market and also General Manager of Shasta Livestock Auction Yard in Cottonwood, California, a family-owned business where he worked for over four decades.

The Community Foundation created the Animal Welfare Endowment Fund to provide for the care and feeding of animals in Shasta, Siskiyou, and Tehama counties. Grants will be made to nonprofit organizations who promote the welfare of animals in the following categories: supporting homeless animals, supporting owned pets, supporting wildlife, supporting working animals, and disaster preparedness for animals.

Community Foundation Founding Board member, Judge Stephen Baker and his family established this fund in 2003. The Baker family has resided in the Redding area for numerous generations and has a long history of public service. The fund is used for philanthropic projects benefiting the Redding area as advised by the Bakers.

In appreciation for our sponsors and the community, the Big Bike Weekend Community Fund was established to invest in organizations and agencies who have done so much to enhance our community.

This family endowment is established to benefit and support qualified charities and nonprofit entities strictly within the United States.

The Burney Regional Community Fund was established to address the needs within the communities of the Greater Burney Region, and to build a community of philanthropists in the region now and forever.

My name is Don Burton. My Grandfather, Marvin Burton founded Burton’s Shoes in 1948 in Downtown Redding, eventually expanding to 8 Burtons’ Shoes stores across the North State. As a child, I was very fortunate and blessed to be able to simply go to the shoe store to pick out my favorite shoes. I vividly remember hearing my parents say “Which shoes do you want Donny? Ok, now run around the store to make sure they fit!” Those two shoes made me feel amazing! They looked cool and I was instantly cool! I couldn’t wait to get to school to show my friends! Now as an adult, I’m honoring the legacy of my grandfather and my father, Richard Burton, with Burton’s 2 Shoes. Our mission is to provide new shoes to local underprivileged kids. Your donation stays local and funds will benefit organizations and schools across the North State.

Division 16 of the California Retired Teachers Association established this scholarship to benefit students preparing to enter a career in education who have attended Shasta College for two years.

Candi and her family are strong supporters of Catholic education and the benefits students receive through Catholic education. This educational endowment in Candi’s name has been established to perpetuate her love for Catholic education.

Pearl Barr dearly loved her only child, Clement “Alan” DeTournay, who passed away early in life. This memorial fund was established upon Pearl’s passing in 2016 to benefit and support her lifelong passions – helping disabled youth and the prevention of child abuse.

The Clures value the engagement of their entire family in the practice of making philanthropic decisions. Together, they look for opportunities to improve their community by providing grants to deserving and qualified nonprofits.

This fund promotes awareness and raises funds for the purchase, training, and veterinary care of active and retired law enforcement canines in Redding. Donations allow for supplemental equipment, training and other resources as identified by the K-9 Unit.

ALL ABOARD! On the corner of Butte and Market Streets stands the Downtown Redding Steam Whistle — the finishing touch art project on over $300 million dollars of recent downtown revitalization. When it was unveiled in May 2020, thousands of Redding residents gathered to celebrate our new landmark that honored our history in the timber, rail, mining, and steel businesses. The Friday 5PM steam whistle blast became a Redding tradition overnight–our way of turning generations of hard work into a single shared moment that lets everyone know it’s time to blow off some steam!

Here’s a lesser-known community secret---the whistle wasn’t REAL.

The “whistle" was created using some theatrical smoke machines and sound equipment that was copied from a steam whistle replica used at a football stadium.

Now imagine if the whistle were a live, fully functional, water-boiling, same-as-the-19th-century-train-and-timber-mill steam whistle! The same iconic blast that once sent workers home would call people downtown to start up their weekend.

K2 Development has invested over $220,000 to make the Downtown Redding Steam Whistle a reality. To fully realize the dream of a fully-functioning whistle system that is tied into a computer system that also plays audio through the speakers already installed on Market Street, we must raise another $200,000 to fill the gap. By contributing to this project, you’re helping transform a beloved landmark into a living piece of Redding’s history. This is a chance to create something special that future generations will remember about prior generations.

The Gleasons established this fund to provide scholarships for qualified Shasta County students with financial needs seeking a college education in the medical field. Specifically, awards will be focused on students studying mental health, psychiatry, or pre-med studies.

Dr. Frank L Doane acquired his medical degree in 1903 and opened a medical office in Red Bluff in 1904. Jessie M. McKinney was Dr. Doane’s sister-in-law. Out of respect for Dr. Doane, the residual of her estate was placed in a trust for scholarships, to be given to qualified Tehama County high school graduates who plan to pursue a career as a registered nurse.

Mr. and Mrs. McKillop have established this Fund to benefit and support charitable efforts consistent with family giving.

Created in memory of her mother, Janel Gesberg grants financial resources and teddy bears to local organizations that support children who are facing illness, hardships or have other immediate needs.

Youth Options Shasta, formerly Youth Violence Prevention Council, established this fund to help meet the basic needs of at-risk youth. It provides support to adolescents to help them achieve educational and career goals as well as mental and physical well being.

This was the first scholarship fund established at the Community Foundation, created to honor the friendships and loyalty of twelve Redding friends.

The George Grotefend Scholarship provides funding for students who graduate successfully after having attended all four years of high school in Shasta County and who plan to continue their education at a four-year college or university or other accredited institution of higher learning in the State of California.

The Gifts that Give Fund is established to support causes that address homelessness, women’s needs, and provide scholarships to students entering a teaching career. Grants will be made to organizations in Shasta County, CA and Chenango County, NY.

Glen Hawk Sr. served on the Shasta High School Board of Directors from 1979-1989. This scholarship benefits a Shasta county graduating senior who will pursue a vocational or technical certification at an accredited technical school or community college.

This fund was established in November 2017 to benefit and support benevolent giving, through grants made to deserving and qualified nonprofit entities.

In honor of Gregory, this scholarship award will be offered annually to a Foothill High School graduating senior who plans to major in the field of Science.

Geoff and Connie are strong believers in giving back to the community. The Grinols Family Fund was established to support organizations doing work that speaks to their hearts.

Continuing the legacy gifted to her by Pat, her “daughter”, Lynn E. Fritz, honors her by awarding support to other women demonstrating like attributes in their journey of self-discovery, empowerment, education and community service.

Human Response Network (HRN) is a private, community-based, nonprofit organization that serves Trinity County in Northern California with a wide array of social and educational services.

Established in 1980 by women determined to provide needed resources to families in Trinity County, HRN is dedicated to protecting each person's right to live in safety with dignity. The agency grew out of a grassroots movement to provide support to women and children who were victims of domestic violence, abuse, or sexual assault. Since then, HRN has expanded its role in the community to include a variety of services for children, individuals, and families of all types and sizes.

The Jack Schreder Endowment Fund provides scholarships to Shasta County graduating seniors in honor of Jack’s 65 years of work in education, his contributions and influence in our community during his lifetime. In addition to his strong interest in education, he expanded science education and vocational training in Shasta County. The Jack Schreder Endowment will support scholarships to Shasta County graduating seniors pursuing Education, Science, and/or Vocational Training. Jack believed scholarships provide encouragement for students continuing post high school education as well as financial support.

The Jackson Family scholarship was originally established in 2007 to support promising students in nurse training programs. Scholarship awards will be made to students who are either seeking to enter the nursing profession or who are currently in the nursing profession and wish to obtain a higher level of certification in the nursing field (LVN to RN, RN to BSN).

This scholarship fund is established in loving memory of Jeanne Yalon Owens to benefit and support Siskiyou County high school graduates pursuing higher education in the field of health care.

Jim Cusick, born and raised in Weed, CA spent most of his life in the Weed/Mt. Shasta area. On June 30, 1979 he married the love of his life, Dolores Irene Smith Balcom. Jim passed in 1997 and Dode joined him in 2017. Since 1998 this scholarship, now dedicated to both their memories, has helped local high school athletes attain their college dreams.

The Josephine Taylor Foundation was established to explore practices of maintaining physical, spiritual, and emotional health and well-being through the balance of body energy fields and corrective physical practices.

The K2 Knott Family Fund was established to benefit and support charitable purposes in Shasta County. 

The Enterprise Lions Club of Redding, California constructed the giant American Flag and flagpole on North Bechelli Lane at Interstate 5. Dedicated on the first anniversary of 9/11 the flag serves to honor all who serve our country. The Enterprise Lions established this Keep Our Flag Flying endowment fund in 2006 to ensure that the flag will be maintained for perpetuity.

This scholarship is in honor and loving memory of Kelly Moravec. Kelly was a young man who despite huge battles with medical tragedies, kept true to his academic goals and dreams. The scholarship aids students who have overcome personal medical adversities and encourages continued education beyond high school with awards and gifts for academic achievement.

This fund was created by friends, family, former students and general well wishers of Ken Putnam to mark his retirement from Shasta High School where he taught choral music for more than thirty years. This fund benefits Shasta High School graduates who participated in the vocal music program.

This fund was established by the Redding Kiwanis to fund Key Club Scholarships for graduating seniors from Foothill, Enterprise, and Shasta High schools.

In appreciation of the community’s support of their business, Frozen Gourmet Inc., Bill and Daphne Kohn established an endowment fund at the Community Foundation to give back to local non-profit groups and organizations.

This fund was established to support single mothers pursuing education and/or agricultural education in Shasta and Siskiyou counties.

The Lassen Park Foundation provides philanthropic support to preserve and interpret the special natural and cultural resources of Lassen Volcanic National Park and its environs for present and future generations.

Supporters of the Leadership Redding program established this fund to ensure the future financial viability and stability of the program.

Lou and Diane Gerard made Northern California their home, moving to Redding in 1959. Passionate about their community, each served on numerous boards and organizations over their lifetimes. They were particularly passionate about education, serving on Redding area school boards for a combined 89 years. This endowed fund provides scholarship opportunities for persons seeking to further their education.

In 1999, Madrone Hospice built the Hospice House as an option for hospice patients who are unable to remain in their homes. The Fund is established primarily as an endowment fund to provide for current income and long-term protection of operations for the Hospice House.

The Fund is established to benefit and support the legacy of Joshua Ray Ahlberg’s “Make Someone’s Day” philosophy of life through support of programs, services, and activities to benefit youth in Shasta County.

The Marcia McKenzie ‘Pay It Forward’ Scholarship Fund honor’s Marcia’s strong belief in a college education to further a person’s career goals and life path. This scholarship is open to all majors, with preference given to applicants with an articulated career path, and life or community experiences that have delayed but clarified career intentions.

The Fund is established to benefit and support client trainings, health and human services assistance and essential life skills to low income populations in Shasta and/or Tehama counties.

The Matt & Anna Moseley Charitable Fund was established to benefit and support Shasta County nonprofits that assist children in need, families trying to adopt who can’t afford all the fees, anti-trafficking, and other like causes.

This scholarship was established in memory of Matt Solus, the son of Fred & Elouise Solus of Yreka. Matt was a member of the Explorer Program with the Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Department and had a strong interest in law enforcement and fire science. The scholarship supports students in Siskiyou County pursuing careers in fire science or law enforcement.

PURPOSE: to support Medical Workforce Development in Shasta County with a focus on primary care, prioritizing local students/practitioners who intend to practice in Shasta County for the long-term.

Grants will be directed to:
>Grow the workforce through scholarships to Shasta County students pursuing undergraduate, licensing, or advanced degrees in areas of primary care, prioritizing students intending to practice in Shasta County after completing their education
>Support residency program participants to attend trainings, workshops, or related programs in fulfillment of their residency requirements, prioritizing participants intending to stay in Shasta County after completing their residency
>Other recruitment, retention, or talent acquisition initiatives and opportunities that align with the purpose of the fund, which may include (but not limited to) post-graduation scholarships (aka student loan repayment) as allowed by law.

The Fund will be advised by community members in Shasta County who have a current or previous role or experience in primary care and/or medical workforce development.

The Michael James Mangas Memorial Endowment Fund was established to honor the life of Michael, the 19 month old son of Jake and Janet Mangas of Redding, who passed away in his sleep in June 2007. Available funds will be used to support programs that have the potential to bring joy to children and enrich their lives.

This fund was established in 2004 to honor the memory of Millie Driscoll. This endowment annually supports Haven Humane Society, the Good News Rescue Mission, Shasta County Women’s Refuge and Northern California Shriner’s Hospital in Sacramento.

The City of Dunsmuir is raising money to create a public trail connecting the Hedge Creek Falls Trail to Mossbrae Falls. When completed, the Hedge Creek Falls trail will be extended another 0.6 miles, becoming one mile long, providing access to two of the most beautiful waterfalls in the North State.

By donating to the Mt. Shasta City Park Fund you will be supporting the Mt. Shasta Recreation and Parks District to further recreation opportunities, enhance facilities and support recreation and parks for future generations.

This endowment fund supports the expansion of educational and advocacy programs for mental illness in order to ensure that the programs have financial stability for their important work in our communities.

The Nicholas Gaynor Scholarship Fund was created by his mother, Maureen, and Grandmother, Patricia, to honor the life of Nicholas. To honor Nicholas’ short life and the nursing team, this scholarship will be used to provide financial support to local students seeking a career in nursing.

The Nick Dahl Memorial Veterans Fund was established by Mike and Pam Dahl in memory of their son, Army veteran, Nicholas Dahl, as a means to assist local veterans with housing and to help with other veteran-related issues in the Redding community.

The North State Scholarship Fund is a general scholarship fund at the Community Foundation that exists with the purpose of benefiting the students of our region forever.

The Community Foundation’s North State Wildfire Recovery Fund will support intermediate and long-term recovery efforts for major wildfires within Shasta, Siskiyou and Tehama Counties, as well as preparedness efforts.

The North Valley Medical Association is a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping Shasta, Siskiyou, Trinity and Tehama counties bridge to better health. NVMA’s Community Health Grants will be awarded to organizations focused on recruiting and retaining physicians, and other healthcare workforce education to improve access to care. These funds were established in 2013 by the former NVMA Alliance, a separate but affiliated nonprofit, to promote good health, advance quality healthcare, and increase quality of life.

The Oregon Street Attic closed its doors 2021. The sale of the property, however, is not the end of The Attic story. The proceeds were placed in the Oregon Street Attic Fund. In this way, these funds will be used to continue The Attic’s mission of supporting other local nonprofits.

Contributions to this fund help prevent child abuse by educating children, parents and child custodians” to both recognize abusive behaviors and build positive parenting skills. Raising Shasta (formerly Pathways to Hope for Children) advocates for legal changes that encourage a healthy social view of our most valued asset.

Reflecting the passions and interests of the donors, the fund supports literacy and arts education programs provided by Shasta Public Libraries.

This fund, in memory of Prudy Kennedy, retired City Clerk for the City of Mt. Shasta, was established through her bequest to benefit and support the advancement of medical, educational, social, environmental and artistic purposes.

This fund is established in honor of Bill, Jeanette, and Sidney Pucek. This scholarship fund is established to benefit and support students in the North State pursuing an associate degree in a vocational program, preferably in the building trades.

The RABA Salute to Veterans Fund purchases RABA bus passes for veterans in need of transportation.

Raiann’s Sunshine Fund is established in honor of Raiann Wilson’s 17-year tenure at the Community Foundation of the North State. The Community Foundation Board established this fund as recognition for Raiann’s contributions over the years. Grants will be distributed to those in need of more sunshine and good will.

This scholarship aims to reward and motivate students early in their high school careers and build a sense of hope for the pursuit of higher education.

The Redding Rancheria is a federally recognized Tribe whose members are of the Pit River, Yana and Wintu descent. This fund was established to give to worthy causes in the surrounding communities.

The Roger Borkey Collegiate Scholarship Fund honors Roger’s dedication to service and integrity and his 37 years as an active Rotary member. Awards will support Burney or Fall River High School seniors, or graduates within the last 3 years, who are planning to attend a four-year college, university, or vocational school. Interact Club members are encouraged to apply.

Awarding is slated to begin in 2027.

This fund was founded on the idea that if we take care of ourselves, our families and our neighbors, it has a beneficial ripple effect in our region. It is envisioned that all who need help will be taken care of and that our community as a whole will benefit. Grants from this fund are made to deserving and qualified nonprofits who provide essential services and/or educational opportunities to improve circumstances for the poor or under-served.

Pat and Jackie Savage established the Savage Grant Fund to benefit charitable causes in Shasta and Trinity Counties. The fund will focus on the support of Police and/or Sheriff K9 dogs, including any program-related expenses associated with the K9 dogs or the outfitting of vehicles to accommodate them.

Pat and Jackie Savage established the Savage Scholarship Fund to help motivated students who want a better life for themselves, and to give them a chance to join the world of work as soon as possible with training and confidence.

This fund was established to support the planetarium in bringing the fascination of astronomy and science to a greater audience.

Kendall and Susan Seamans established this endowment in 2006 in appreciation for the opportunities that Redding has provided to their family. It is the family’s intent to support community projects in Redding with an emphasis on youth and education.

Serene Strides is a 501c3 dedicated to providing high-quality, evidence-based equine-assisted mental health services to individuals seeking a holistic approach to their mental wellness. With a facility in Los Molinos and a partner facility in north Butte County, we offer programming in both Tehama and Butte Counties. Our Equine-Assisted Social Emotional Learning (SEL) Program, offered for both individual and small groups, is designed to help participants develop essential social and emotional skills through immersive experiences in nature and meaningful interactions with horses. Interactions with horses provide a powerful, hands-on approach to learning. Through guided activities such as grooming, leading, and groundwork, participants can practice skills like communication, trust-building, and problem-solving in a safe and supportive environment. Gifts to the Serene Strides Fund will support: • Scholarships for Social Emotional Learning Program for youth • Care and feeding of equine partners • Capital improvements for program delivery and enhancement

This fund supports the ongoing mission of Shasta Community Health Center (SCHC). The mission of SCHC is to ensure access to high quality primary and preventive medical, dental, mental and general health care services to those who have great difficulty accessing care in our community.

This scholarship fund is available for staff of the Shasta Community Health Center, their children, and grandchildren. This scholarship will support high school seniors, college students (two- or four-year school), and trade students pursuing higher education in any field, either at a two- or four-year college or trade school.

Proceeds from this fund help to protect the abundance and diversity of native plant and animal species within the wetland habitats of the Rivercrest Estates Open Space Preserve. Repair and restoration of damaged conditions may also be supported.

The sale of Camp Latieze property in Manton made this fund possible and provides educational benefits to the children of Shasta County. Some examples of student benefits include field trips to Schreder Planetarium and hands-on environmental day camps for Shasta County students when circumstances allow.

The Shasta County Fund was established to build permanent resources to support Shasta County needs for generations.

The Shasta County Fund provides grants to nonprofit organizations serving Shasta County. The Fund is directed by CFNS and is advised by members from across the county to address urgent needs throughout the community.

Any donations to this fund can be designated for a specific County Office program to support students and educators in our region.

Thanks to a seed gift from a generous donor in 2021, Shasta County families will have more opportunities for safe housing.

The Siskiyou County Fund was established to build permanent resources to support Siskiyou County needs for generations.

The Siskiyou County Fund provides grants to nonprofit organizations serving Siskiyou County. The Fund is directed by CFNS and is advised by members from across the county to address urgent needs throughout the community.

The Siskiyou Family YMCA Fund provides current income and long-term protection for the Siskiyou Family YMCA, serving Siskiyou County from our Yreka location.

We are a community based non-profit organization that strives to protect open space, ranch and farmlands, forest and wetlands, natural resources, scenic viewsheds and wildlife habitat in beautiful Siskiyou County.

The Redding Aqua Ducks Swim team and Head Coach, Mark Wagner, established the Swim Redding Fund. The Swim Team’s vision is to provide a positive environment for kids to compete and enjoy swimming while teaching sportsmanship, accountability and discipline.

The Tallerico family established this fund at the Community Foundation to give back to charitable organizations doing work that speaks to their hearts and supports the community where they live.

The Tauhindauli Park and Trail Endowment Fund was established by the Dunsmuir Garden Club for the ongoing maintenance of Tauhindauli Park and Trail, a public park located on the Upper Sacramento River in Dunsmuir.

This Fund is established to benefit and support the Tehama Concert Series for Students presented by the Tehama County Community Concert Association.

The Tehama County Friends of the Library are dedicated to helping the libraries of Tehama County, believing that libraries are the main cultural centers of our communities. This fund provides for necessary items that tax dollars do not cover.

The Tehama County Fund was established to build permanent resources to support Tehama County needs for generations.

The Tehama County Fund provides grants to nonprofit organizations serving Tehama County. The Fund is directed by CFNS and is advised by members from across the county to address urgent needs throughout the community.

Your contribution to this Children and Families Fund makes you an important partner in First 5 Shasta’s work toward building and strengthening a pathway to success for young children.

This fund was established by Turtle Bay Exploration Park, in memory of Spencer Enochian, to provide for current income and long-term protection of operations for the Children’s Art Outreach Program at Turtle Bay.

The mission of the Top of the State Board of Directors is to provide educational scholarships for Shasta and Tehama county high school students who have played golf in high school or junior golf programs, and plan to pursue degrees at two, or four-year universities and colleges.

The Fund is established to benefit and support veterans and their families in our communities through grants made to deserving and qualified nonprofit entities.

Named in honor of their family, Dr. and Mrs. Tillis established this fund to support charities in Whatcom County, Washington; Shasta County, California; and qualified national organizations.

This fund was designated in 2021 to benefit Simpson University’s School of Nursing through annual grants for the nursing program.

This fund was created to support the United Methodist Church of Yreka’s youth ministry. Once a goal of at least $5000 is reached the interest accrued from the endowment will be given to help support activities such as youth outreach, missions trips, and summer youth camps. As the endowment grows so will the amount given back to the youth ministry.

This fund was established to maintain a dignified resting place to honor our Veterans and express gratitude for their service to our Country. By covering costs for watering and landscaping maintenance, the cemetery remains a source of pride to Veteran’s families and residents of Northern California.

This fund was established to support this unique learning opportunity for the youth of our region.

The Women’s Fund of the Community Foundation began in February 2008 with a founding cabinet of 10 women, representing diverse backgrounds, ages, and perspectives, all from the greater Redding region.
